i hate animal intelligence debates. they always leave me feeling furious because the way i see it most people’s concept of “intelligence” is cynical and elitist. i think thats because of the way people are treated by their parents and teachers. if you cannot comprehend something it must mean you have a ‘deficit’ of some kind. i believe this is also the reason discussions about intelligence almost always descend into annoying passive aggressive one-up fests.
i don’t even think there is such thing as ‘intelligence’. there is no scientific consensus on what it even is and it cannot be tested. what can be objectively tested is skills. i think people have only gotten so much “further ahead” than other animals basically is because of their social skills. neil armstrong didn’t land himself on the moon. and someone didn’t just up and think of space shuttles in one day. it took thousands of years of information being passed down and built upon by millions of people and then thousands of people working together to use it. not that i am trying to downplay human accomplishments. i think it is just as positive to think of it this way.
theres no such thing as ’stupid’, there’s no ’stupid’ people and no ’stupid’ animals. i think believing that is as cynical as saying ‘god made the universe’. it just sucks the true beauty and wonder of life and existance out of everything. everything is built a certain way to accomplish a certain task. thats it. nothing is “more” evolved or “better” evolved.
just my 2 cents.
